Calgary Pride returns this year with a vibrant lineup of events from August 26th to September 1st, culminating in a spectacular celebration at Prince’s Island Park. As one of the city’s most anticipated annual festivals, Calgary Pride showcases the diversity, resilience, and rich cultural tapestry of the LGBTQ2S+ community within this beautiful city!

Celebrating Calgary Pride 2024: A Rich History

Since its inception as Project Pride Calgary in 1987, the festival has grown from a modest gathering to a city-wide extravaganza. It began with the courageous efforts of local organizations like Camp 181 and Apollo Friends in Sport, who pioneered Calgary’s first Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival in 1988. Over the years, the Calgary Pride organization itself has evolved, embracing inclusivity and expanding its reach across the community, with events all year round!

In 1991, the first Calgary Pride Parade marked a pivotal moment in the city’s LGBTQ2S+ history, drawing both support and controversy. Today, the parade symbolizes unity and visibility, marching proudly through the streets of downtown Calgary on September 1st, starting at the Confluence and culminating at Prince’s Island Park – a short 15-minute walk from The Westley Hotel.

The Experience: August 31st – September 1st

Saturday evening starts with the 18+ Festival Night at Prince’s Island Park, featuring mature vendors and captivating performances from 5 PM to 10 PM. It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the spirit of pride amidst Calgary’s stunning natural backdrop.

On Sunday morning, join the lively Calgary Pride Parade starting at 10:30 AM, where participants march from the Confluence towards 5th Street SW, spreading joy and solidarity throughout the city. The parade is followed by the All-Ages Festival Day at Prince’s Island Park, running from 12 PM to 10 PM, offering a full day of family-friendly activities, live entertainment, and community engagement.

Calgary Pride: More Than a Festival

Beyond its festive atmosphere, Calgary Pride is a beacon of advocacy and progress. It has championed LGBTQ2S+ rights, contributing to significant milestones such as the municipal ban on conversion therapy and enhancing visibility through symbolic initiatives like queer art festivals and walks, and rainbow and trans flag crosswalks on Stephen Avenue.
